Makaia is a beautiful two-year-old girl living with Alagille syndrome and a complex congenital heart condition. After major open-heart surgery, countless hospital admissions and numerous procedures, her biggest battle is now her severely underdeveloped pulmonary arteries.
Her family were told there were no further surgical options available in Australia. But they refused to give up hope.
After searching overseas, they connected with Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where specialists have identified a potential pathway for pulmonary artery reconstruction.
Makaia now needs to travel to Chicago for extensive assessment to determine whether surgery may be possible.
